Dominica Travel Guide

Getting to Dominica

Getting to Dominica: There are no nonstops from the United States, so you'll have to transfer in the British Virgin Islands, Antigua, Barbados, Martinique, San Juan, St. Maarten, or St. Vincent. There is also a ferry (90 minutes) from Guadeloupe or Martinique.

Hassle Factor: High.

On the Ground: Taxis and minibuses are available at the airports and in Roseau as well as at most hotels and guesthouses. Rates are fixed by the government (if you share a taxi with other passengers going in the same direction, you can negotiate a special price; a trip from Melville Hall Airport to Roseau can cost as little as $30 per person). Taxi drivers also offer tours anywhere on the island beginning at $30 an hour for up to four people; a four- to five-hour island tour costs approximately $150. It's best to get a recommendation from your hotel. You can recognize a taxi or minibus by the H, HA, and HB plates; simply flag them down or make your way to the nearest bus stop.
