Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Louvre
Calle Milanés 47, Matanzas, Matanzas Province, Cuba
Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.
This cold-water (as of this writing, anyway) spot is a risky recommendation. It's such a classic place—in all its decaying splendor—that it's worth a try. There's always the possibility that its classic charms will have been restored and rehabilitated by the time you arrive, though we have been waiting for that long-promised development since 2000. With four antiques-appointed bedrooms over the town's central square, the Louvre is the very essence of Old Matanzas. A romantic adventure would include the four-hour Hershey Train to Matanzas, a night at the Louvre, and a performance at the Teatro Sauto.
PROS
- old-world charm
CONS
- old and run-down
