There's very little crime in eastern Cuba (tourists are particularly safe). In Santiago you may be bothered by panhandlers, particularly around Parque Céspedes, or by young men wanting to serve as your guide or refer you to a casa particular or to a paladar. Ignore their advice, and try to remain polite. To a lesser extent it can occur in isolated Baracoa: as you approach the town by car, for example, teens on bicycles ride alongside, trying to make a commission on a private home stay. Stay calm; they're harmless.
