Fodor's Expert Review Sandcastle

White Bay, Jost Van Dyke, VG1160, British Virgin Islands

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Sleep steps from beautiful White Bay beach at this tiny beachfront hideaway, an island favorite for more than 40 years. Four peach-color, one-bedroom wooden cottages have large windows, ceiling fans, and refrigerators. If you want an air-conditioned room, be sure to reserve it ahead of time. In the cause of peace and serenity, there are no TVs or telephones in guest rooms. Furnishings are simple and a little dated, but you don't come here to sit in your room: it's the beach that keeps guests returning year after year. The resort provides beach chairs, hammocks, snorkels, and a wide range of beach toys for its guests. Unfortunately, you will have to share the beach between 11 am and 3 pm many days, as White Bay can draw hundreds of charter-boat day-trippers who arrive on large catamarans for lunch and drinks at the Soggy Dollar Bar. Small cruise ships also drop anchor some days. At night the crowds thin out dramatically, and resort guests tuck into a casually elegant but excellent dinner at the Sandcastle Restaurant. For week-long stays you have the option of a package that includes breakfast and five dinners. The staff has worked here for years and is quick to share both a smile and helpful local knowledge. Children under the age of 16 are not accepted as overnight guests.
