Bonaire Shopping

View all »

You can get to know all the shops in Kralendijk in an hour or so, but sometimes there's no better way to enjoy some time out of the sun and sea than to go shopping (particularly if your companion is a dive fanatic and you're not). Almost all the shops are on the Kaya Grandi and adjacent streets and in tiny malls. Harbourside Mall is a pleasant, open-air mall with several fine air-conditioned shops. The most-distinctive local crafts are fanciful painted pieces of driftwood and hand-painted kunuku, or little wilderness houses. Buy as many flamingo T-shirts as you want, but don't take home items made of goatskin or tortoise shell; they aren't allowed into the United States. Remember, too, that it's forbidden to take sea fans, coral, conch shells, and all other forms of marine life off the island.
