Harbourfront

Harbourfront Review

When you dine at a table beside the enormous open windows, you might feel as though you are floating on the harbor yourself. Nearly every seat in the house has beautiful views of the quiet waters. Few Bermuda restaurants have menus as varied as this busy spot, where sushi is served alongside international specialties. For lunch, you might have a burger, a salad, or sushi. For dinner, start with salmon tartare and tuna carpaccio, followed by the roasted chicken, veal milanese, roasted duck breast, or mushroom risotto. Sushi devotees should come during sushi happy hour from 5 to 6:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

I am American living in Bermuda. My mom visited for the Christmas holidays. Her first night here I wanted to treat her to a nice dinner. My initial visit to Harbourfront was nice and I decided to take her. I made reservations for dinner. When we arrived it was still sushi happy hour. We were only given the happy our menus, so we thought that was our only option. The happy hour menu had no specialty rolls, just simple maki and nigiri, no frills. I can understand for $4.95 an order. For business though it would seem they would push some of the delicious special rolls or ask if you were interested in dinner. My mother wanted something hot so we asked for a dinner menu.

The dinner menu was too intricate with long japanese names, and not much explanation of the entree. With frustration, she ordered from the evening dinner special, local Rockfish. How could she go wrong with local? I ordered shrimp tempura. The pan fried Rockfish was boring with bokchoy mixed vegetables and a potato. $37.00 for this entree she didn't even eat half the fish, no flavor. Pan fried and no flavor? My shrimp were not fresh and the tempura batter was not thoroughly cooked leaving it soggy inside. I didn't finish either. The seaweed on the smoked salmon maki was impossible to chew and ended up as green balls on the side of our plate. My mom was not impressed and neither was I for the second time around.

Just too stuffy for a beach atmosphere. We enjoyed the restaurant being on the water just not the industrial location. We were told that we could walk from Hamilton - but not a very nice area to walk through - plus no sidewalks and the traffic is very busy. The food was OK - my fish was dry and the famous Bermuda fish chowder was not the best. We thought it was good because we ate there our first night but other places were much better. Would not go back.
