This seaside outpost overlooking a 9-mile stretch of the stunning east coast has been a rustic retreat since the 1700s. Today the hotel attracts guests who are content with taking a walk or curling up with a good book, as well as surfers who like the location near Bathsheba Beach and its famous Soup Bowl. As if that's not enough natural beauty, the western side of the hotel backs up against Joe's River and the 85-acre Joe's River Tropical Rainforest, complete with trails
through the hills, gullies, and dense foliage. All but two rooms have a partial or full ocean view, and many have balconies. The view from Room 222 is particularly amazing. A previous owner made, by hand, all of the sturdy mahogany furniture in the hotel—and there's lots of it. You'll marvel at the parquet ceilings and magnificent leaded-glass windows throughout the hotel—and the pool that's shaped like Barbados.
