Because we would like to recommend more places to stay than we have room, here are some additional suggestions:
$-$$ New Edgewater (Bathsheba Beach, Bathsheba, St. Joseph. 246/433-9900. www.newedgewater.com). New owners refurbished and upgraded the rooms at this remote cliff-side hideaway, while retaining its rustic (some might say funky) beach-house atmosphere, handmade furniture, parquet ceilings, and leaded-glass windows.
$-$$ Coconut Court Beach Resort (Main Rd., Hastings Bay, Christ Church. 246/427-1655. www.coconut-court.com). This resort is popular among families, who love the Coco Kids Club and children's pools. The 126 apartments and efficiencies have kitchenettes; request one with air-conditioning and, if you wish, satellite TV.
$ Hotel PomMarine (Barbados Community College, Hastings, Christ Church. 246/228-0900. www.pommarinebarbados.com). Staffed by Hospitality Institute students at Barbados Community College, the 20 rooms and one self-catering suite here are simple yet comfortable. Enjoy the pool, tennis court, fine dining at Muscovado Restaurant -- and perhaps observe students working in a demo kitchen. Hastings Beach is across the street.
$ Sandy Bay Beach Resort (Main Rd., Worthing, Christ Church. 246/435-8000. www.sandybeachbarbados.com). Broad Sandy Beach is the main attraction at this 127-room resort, which also offers a waterfall pool, water sports, and a full-time activities director.
$$$$ Crystal Cove Hotel (Hwy. 1, Appleby, St. James. 246/432-2683. www.crystalcovehotelbarbados.com). This 88-room resort spills down a hillside to the beach where you can swim, sail, snorkel, water-ski, windsurf, or kayak to your heart's content -- or play tennis, dip in the pool, or take advantage of the golf privileges.
$$$$ The House (Hwy. 1, Paynes Bay, St. James. 246/432-5525. www.thehousebarbados.com). Privacy, luxury, and service are hallmarks of this 31-suite adult sanctuary next door to sister resort Tamarind Cove. A 24-hour "ambassador" service caters to your every whim.
$$$-$$$$ Little Good Harbour (Hwy. 1B, Shermans, St. Peter. 246/439-3000. www.littlegoodharbourbarbados.com). A cluster of classy, spacious one-, two-, and three-bedroom, self-catering cottages overlooks a narrow strip of beach in the far north of Barbados -- just beyond the picturesque fishing village of Six Men's Bay.
$$$$ Lone Star Hotel (Hwy. 1, Holetown, St. James. 246/419-0599. www.thelonestar.com). A 1940s service station transformed into a chic four-suite hotel -- now there's an idea! Two architecturally fascinating suites at beach level and two upstairs are furnished with Bajan mahogany and chic Italian-designed furniture. The restaurant is also extraordinary.
