Starting December 31, 2006, all visitors to the Bahamas will need to present a passport to enter the country. This is due to the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, which has toughened entry requirements for countries throughout the Americas and the Caribbean. Until that date, U.S. citizens can gain entry to the Bahamas with just a photo ID and proof of citizenship (Starting December 31, 2006, U.S. citizens will also need a valid passport to re-enter the United States from the Bahamas -- or any other country they are returning from via air of sea travel).
Residents of the United States can stay in the Bahamas for up to eight months. You also must show proof of a return or onward ticket; if you show up at the airport counter with a one-way ticket, be prepared to shell out for a return flight on the spot or be denied boarding.
For specific entry questions, contact the Bahamas Immigration Department or the nearest consulate.
