Cameras & Photography in Bahamas

Frothy waves in a turquoise sea and palm-lined crescents of beach are relatively easy to capture on film if you don't let the brightness of the sun on sand and water fool your light meter. You'll need to compensate or else work early or late in the day when the light isn't as brilliant and contrast isn't such a problem. Try to capture expansive views of waterfront, beach, or village scenes; consider shooting down onto the shore from a clearing on a hillside or from a rock on the beach. Or zoom in on something colorful, such as a delicate tropical flower or a craftsman at work. Always ask permission to take pictures of locals or their property and offer a gratuity.

Film & Developing

If you're using a digital camera, bring plenty of memory with you. Although digital accessories are available in the larger cities and resort areas, the selection is limited, and what you find is likely to cost quite a bit more than it would back home. Similarly, film is expensive in the Bahamas, so it's best to bring it with you. Popular brands of film are available in Nassau and Freeport, with a more limited selection in the Out Islands. Likewise, you'll find film-developing stores (some with one-hour service) in shopping centers in Nassau and Freeport, but developing will likely be pricier and more difficult to find in the Out Islands.
