Fish, conch, land crabs, and rock lobster—called crawfish by the locals—have long been the bedrock of local cuisine. Although a few menus, mostly in upscale resorts, feature dishes with international influences, most restaurants in the Abacos still serve simple Bahamian fare, with a few nods to American tastes. There are some fancier restaurants in Marsh Harbour, Treasure Cay, and Hope Town, but most restaurants are relaxed about attire and reasonably priced. Some offer live music, and shape the nightlife scene on weekends.
This brightly painted restaurant is perched on a wooden dock over the southwestern side of the harbor. The Bahamian food menu is simple, but everything is delicious. Be sure to order some conch fritters to start—they're some of the best you'll find. They also have a delicious brunch on Saturday, complete with bottomless mimosas or pitchers of freshly made sangria or mojitos. Specialty nights draw a crowd—there's karaoke on Tuesday evening. Wednesday Hump Day, you can enjoy all-day happy-hour specials on wings, conch fritters, and margaritas.
Expect casual lunches and dinners of hot wings, conch burgers, fish nuggets, and steak wraps in this harbor-view restaurant and bar, located inside the Marsh Harbour Marina. If you're dying for a steak after a steady fish diet, these are the best in The Abacos. Unless you're staying on this side of the harbor, you'll need a car or taxi to get here, or expect a long walk from the main street.
They've got a new location (just up the road at The Conch Inn), but it's the same good food, great drinks, and lively atmosphere that has made Snappas a longtime must-stop restaurant and bar. The food is a mix of American and Bahamian fare—tacos, burgers, steaks, fish, and conch.
Dine on a rib eye with smashed potatoes or a broiled lobster tail while overlooking gleaming rows of yachts moored in the Boat Harbour Marina at Abaco Beach Resort. For fresh seafood, the seared snapper and lobster ravioli are particularly good. For dessert, try the calorie-drenched guava duff or bread pudding. For lunch, the menu offers a lighter side, with an array of soups, salads, appetizers, and burgers.
Abaco Beach Resort, off Bay St., Marsh Harbour, Great Abaco Island, Bahamas
This two-story, pink colonial villa sits across Bay Street from the marina, fronted by green lawns, hibiscus, and white-railed verandahs. This is Marsh Harbour's most popular restaurant—the place to go for good food, potent rum cocktails, and serious people-watching. Lunch is a scene, especially if you sit outside, where you'll find a mix of locals, tourists, and boaters enjoying Greek or Caesar salads, spicy grouper, and mahimahi burgers. Inside there's a stylish bar where you can enjoy cocktails or a meal, a small boutique, and three dining rooms, all adorned with Haitian paintings. Dinner is served every night except Sunday and the menu includes creamy curried shrimp, mahimahi Provençal, or a filet mignon smothered in a mushroom sauce, as well as a daily sashimi. Save room for the irresistible key lime pie or Bahamian bread pudding with coconut and raisins, drenched in a brandy sauce.

Start your day off right with a hot Starbucks coffee or an iced frappé and a breakfast sandwich or one of the day's special offerings. Lunch is a variety of soups, salads, wraps, and pasta dishes. The lunch menu changes daily, and it's a good idea to call ahead and place your order.
There's nothing fancy about this clean, bright, diner-style eatery, but the welcome is warm, the Bahamian dishes are well executed, and the prices are right, with most meals clocking in under $15. Choose cracked conch or lobster, or fresh-caught dolphin (also called mahimahi), with your choice of hearty Bahamian sides. Jamie's is also an ice-cream parlor, with a wide selection of flavors. Locals love this place, and it has stayed one of Great Abaco Island's best-kept secrets.
An open-air deck makes Mangoes a great place for waterside dining. Enjoy a traditional Bahamian breakfast; feast on cracked conch and zesty salads at lunch; and at dinner, try house specialties like smudder grouper, fried and seasoned with tomato, thyme, and pepper sauce; grilled rack of lamb; or the catch of the day grilled, fried, or blackened. If it's wahoo, order it grilled with lots of extra lime. The restaurant is housed in a complex that contains a boutique selling resort wear and fine jewelry from around the world, and a 29-slip marina—which means you can sail in from the offshore cays, tie up in front, enjoy a meal, and do some shopping. They also offer free Wi-Fi so you can check your email while grabbing a bite to eat.
If you're looking for a simple but tasty lunch at a great price, check out this octagonal wooden takeout-only restaurant on the western end of Bay Street. The burgers are hand-formed and served up on homemade buns—the spicy bacon cheeseburger is a local favorite. Grab a box of their fried chicken if you're headed out in the boat for a day of exploring, and on a hot day, their homemade ice cream in an array of tropical flavors including coconut, guava, pineapple, and mango is delicious and refreshing. The only seating is on a handful of park benches nearby.
