To some, New Providence has come to be associated largely with Paradise Island—the skinny islet connected to its larger neighbor by bridge (Paradise Island is home to some of the Bahamas' priciest vacation homes and splashiest resorts, including the megaresort and water park, Atlantis). But New Providence Island is also the site of Nassau, the nation's capital. As a historical and cultural center, Nassau is packed with tour-worthy mansions, churches, government buildings, gardens, forts, museums, and monuments, many with a distinctly British accent left over from the old colonial days. Grand Bahama may have had its heyday in the Rat Pack era, but thanks to extensive investment and a determined marketing campaign, it has been making a comeback recently as the nation's big-city alternative to New Providence Island.
