Fodor's Review:

Boat-in guests, divers, and beach-lovers who wish to avoid the upscale Lucaya scene choose landmark Xanadu. Howard Hughes spent the last few years of his life in the penthouse suite of this hotel, which he owned in the 1970s. The resort recently completed a valiant and dramatic comeback after being devastated by fire and hurricanes. The trademark pink exterior has been repainted yellow, and gold tones with arched brick accents and a fireplace now warm the lobby. Located only a few minutes from town, the property's tower (still known as the Howard Hughes Tower), pool wing, and villas overlook the oval pool and fountain, marina, parking lot, or beach. Rooms show their age but have been spruced up with a new designer look. Coconut palms sway at the wide, gorgeous beach, a three-minute walk from the hotel.

Most beautiful location I have ever visited. Great hotel.

You gotta be out of your mind not to love this place. The beach location is breathtaking. The hotel lobby is all marble and mohogany, really pretty. The rooms are bigger than we expected and we could walk to everything(restaurants, clubs and bars, casino, staw markets and shopping areas). Its superb!

This place is a dump!

The only nice thing here is the beautiful beach. This place is 30 years past it's prime, and it shows. It clearly used to be a nice resort. The RCI staff is rude, and dont even think about talking to customer service. The rooms are large, which is a small plus. And the lobby is nice. There are no places to eat or casinos in walking distance. A cab or car is required to get anywhere. If all you want is a quiet beach and dive shop, this is your place. Oh wait - the beach isnt quiet - you are constantly harrassed to pay $2 a chair, pay to have your hair braided, or listen to very loud Bahama Mama music. Those who think this place is wonderful must not travel much. I would never return here.

The WOW factor associated with this hotel is way way up there. The place is right on the ocean(private beach). The water was beautiful and clear. The sand was white and clean. The rooms and hotel was 5-star all the way from the staff attitude to the rooms, restaurants, and lobby area. Good food, great fun, will definately return here.

Incredible. Best Location and Hotel Ever!!!

We stayed here the first week of November 2007 and loved it. The rooms were clean and the furniture was nice and comfy. Balconies had a great view of the ocean. The beach was the best I have ever seen. It was like a postcard. No one hassles you because its a private beach. The water was so clear you could see your feet even when it was up to your waist. Food was good. We checked out the casino and clubs that were walking distance. Loved everything about the island and this hotel. We would go back in a second.

The best hotel and location on the island!

This hotel was really nice. The rooms were very clean and all the furnishings looked new. Big comfortable beds and balconys on every rooom that overlook the private beach area. The beach was flawless, postcard perfect. They had all the watersports and we walked to the casino, clubs, bars, shopping areas, and night clubs. The food was excellent in the hotel and the maids and check in ladies were very nice and helpfull. It just doesn't get any better.

Very nice rooms, location, and activities. Definately one of the top hotels on the island.

We loved this place. It had a great beach. The hotel itself was also nice. Our rooms were very clean and looked out over the ocean. Almost all of the rooms have ocean views. At night we walked to restaurants, shopping, and clubs. During the day we did watersports like parasailing, jet skis, and bannana boats. We really loved the island. It was a perfect vacation all the way around.

Great Resort! Wonderful beach and location.

I don't understand how there could be one negative review of this place. We loved it. The hotel and all the furniture and everything looked brand new, smelled like new carpet in the rooms and lobby areas. It has a good location..walking distnace to the nightlife(clubs, bars, casino). The beach was beautiful. The atmosphere there and the setting is like a postcard. Its a great island and the only resort I would stay at if we go back.

Xanadu the false front tell lies to get you there then

Posted by Joe from Florida on 8/8/06

Save your money stay at home. You will get better service and a nicer place to stay. This place is a front to get you there with nothing to offer. Do your research and pass this place by.The rating should go past 1 because they deserve it,it is that bad!
