Fodor's Review:

The first Colonial Hotel, built by Standard Oil co-founder Henry Flagler in 1899, attracted socialites, royals, and industrialists who arrived by yacht at the hotel's pier at the turn of the 20th century and during the boom years of Prohibition. That building was destroyed by fire in 1921, and the present Mediterranean-style British Colonial—an exact replica—opened a year later, featuring a lustrous saffron facade, gleaming marble floors, and soaring arched ceilings. This landmark building is the social heart of Nassau, the setting for political meetings and the city's most important events. Guest rooms have dark mahogany furniture and marble baths; most have ocean views. The resort sits on eight lush acres next to a white-sand beach, where guests have front-row seats for watching the cruise ships sail into the harbor. With the Nassau Stock Exchange in an adjacent wing, this hotel is the best business choice in the Bahamas. It's also a popular spot for weddings. Watch for brides descending the grand staircase in the lobby on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The hotel's restaurant, Portofino ($-$$), offers Bahamian specialties daily from 6:30 AM to 10:30 PM. Ask for a window table so you can watch the cruise ships sail into harbor.

We absolutely LOVED our stay at this hotel! I proposed to my fiancee at a nearby beach on Thanksgiving Day 2006 and the hotel delivered Dom Perignon to our room on schedule, even providing us with some lovely chocolate-covered strawberries for no additional cost. At check in, they also upgraded us to an ocean view room with a king size bed for no extra cost. Although the rooms are comparably-sized to those in Britain (on the smaller side), the bathrooms were spacious and very clean. The grounds were very well-kept and the pool, beach, and food were excellent. I don't understand why some people rip harshly on this hotel. They must be snobby Americans who expect everything for practically nothing. No, it's not the Atlantis. Don't stay at the Hilton if you want Paradise or a resort. But if you want to stay at a very nice, safe, centrally-located hotel with all of the amenities for which one could ask for a nominal price, then stay at the British Colonial Hilton.
