Columbus Cove

Fodor's Review:

Take a side trip on the unpaved road out to Columbus Cove, 1½ mi north of the Cape Santa Maria resort. The monument and plaque that commemorate Columbus's landing are here, as well as tremendous views of the protected harbor he sailed into. Divers can explore the wreck of a ship, the M/V Comberbach, which lies just off the headland. The Stella Maris Resort sunk the leaky 103-foot freighter in 1985 to create an artificial reef and an excellent dive site nearly 100 feet under. The road to the cove is too rough for most vehicles, but it happens to be a fine walk. An easier way to reach the cove is by boat. Anglers can fish for bonefish and tarpon at the lower tidal stages.
