Arthur's Town

Fodor's Review:

The claim to fame of Arthur's Town is that it was the boyhood home of actor Sidney Poitier, who wrote about growing up here in his autobiography. His parents and relatives were farmers. The village has a BaTelCo station, a few stores, and Pat Rolle's Cookie House Bakery (242/354-2027) —a lunch and dinner spot and an island institution. During slower times of the year, lunch and dinner are not always served, or hours can be irregular. Call ahead, or just stop by to say hello. Also, with advance notice, you can request fresh baked goods. When you drive south from Arthur's Town, which is nearly at the island's northernmost tip, you'll wind along a road that passes through small villages and past bays where fishing boats are tied up.
