Bahamas National Trust Rand Nature Centre

Fodor's Review:
On 100 acres just minutes from downtown Freeport, 1/2 mi of self-guided botanical trails show off 130 types of native plants, including many orchid species. The center is the island's birding hot spot, where you might spy a red-tailed hawk or a Cuban emerald hummingbird sipping hibiscus nectar. The flamingo flock was killed off by raccoons, but the center is in the process of replacing the birds. The new visitor center hosts changing local art exhibits and some resident animals, including a Bahama boa. Outside you can visit the caged one-eyed Bahama parrot the center has adopted. On Tuesday and Thursday free guided tours focusing on the use of plants in Bahamian bush medicine depart at 10:30 AM. The reserve is named for philanthropist James H. Rand, the former president of Remington Rand, who donated a hospital and library to the island.
