Sivananda Yoga Retreat

¢, New Providence Island

Fodor's Review:

Accessible only by boat, this resort is the antithesis of high-rollers' Atlantis down the road on Paradise Island. Guest rooms in the main house and tiny one-room bungalows overlook a gorgeous white-sand beach in a 5-acre compound that stretches from Nassau Harbour to the ocean; air-conditioning is an additional $10 per day. Tent sites are also available for $55 per person. This retreat is for those who are serious about yoga and good health: two two-hour meditations -- the first one starting at 5 AM -- and two two-hour yoga classes are mandatory each day. However, there's free time from 10 AM to 4 PM, and the retreat's shuttle boat will take guests to Nassau for shopping and sightseeing. The price, which is per person, includes two vegetarian meals each day. Rooms are austere, and guests are expected to help clean communal bathrooms. Alcohol, coffee, tea, meat, fish, cigarettes, radios, and TVs are not allowed. For more than 30 years, the ashram has been a tranquil oasis for yoga devotees, including the late Beatle George Harrison, CEOs, and families. Yoga class platforms are next to the beach and harbor. There are also meditation rooms, frequent guest lecturers, and special classes for advanced teacher certification.
