Fodor's Review:
Clarence Town has Long Island's most celebrated landmarks, St. Paul's Church (Anglican) and St. Peter's Church (Catholic). They were both built by Father Jerome, a priest who is buried in a tomb in the Hermitage atop Cat Island's Mt. Alvernia. As an Anglican named John Hawes, he constructed St. Paul's. Later, after converting to Catholicism, he built St. Peter's. The architecture of the two churches is similar to that of the missions established by the Spaniards in California in the late 18th century. Clarence Town is simply gorgeous, fringed by white-sand beaches, and fronted by a stunning oval-shaped bay of clear aqua-blue water dotted with coral heads, sand bars, and small green cays. The harbor is also home to the local government headquarters and dock.
