Spectator Sports in Bahamas

New Providence Island

Among other imperishable traditions, the British handed down to the Bahamians such sports as soccer, rugby, and cricket. The latter, somewhat confusing sport (bring an expert with you, or you'll never know what's going on), is played at Haynes Oval. Baseball games take place at Queen Elizabeth Sports Center, rugby at Winton Estates, and softball at Clifford Park.

For information on spectator sports, call the Ministry of Tourism (242/322-7500 or 800/224-2627), or check the local papers for sports updates and calendars.

Grand Bahama Island

For a taste of true Bahamian sports, visit the Lucaya Cricket Club (Baloa Rd., Lucaya. 242/373-1460). If you feel like joining in, go to training sessions on Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday. The clubhouse has a bar, gym, and changing rooms. Tournaments take place in April and November.
