Grand Bahama Island

Because Grand Bahama is such a large island, it can afford long fairways puddled with lots of water and fraught with challenge. Two championship golf courses at the Westin and Sheraton Grand Bahama Island Resort and one 9-hole course constitute a major attraction on the island. The Westin and Sheraton Lucayan Course operates a golf school and hosts the Breitling Pro-Am in January. Note that greens fees tend to be lower in the off-season (mid-May-mid-December). Currently, two courses at the former Royal Oasis resort remain closed.

Fortune Hills Golf & Country Club is a 3,453-yard, 9-hole, par-36 course -- a Dick Wilson and Joe Lee design -- with a restaurant, bar, and pro shop. E. Sunrise Hwy., Lucaya. 242/373-2222. $53 for 9 holes, $70 for 18 holes, cart included. Club rental $14 for 9 holes, $18 for 18 holes.

The 18th hole has a double lake, and a new clubhouse is being built nearby. Its state-of-the-art instruction facilities include a practice putting green with bunker and chipping areas, covered teaching bays, and a teaching seminar area. A shared electric cart is included in green fees. The Westin and Sheraton Grand Bahama Island Resort, Lucaya. 242/373-2002. $120 for guests, $140 for nonguests.
