The venerable Chez Mathilde, once the bastion of fine French cuisine on the island, has dropped an "h" from its name and been transformed into an equally upscale but decidedly more-modern eatery. Billing itself as "island chic," the interior and courtyard have been transformed from the belle-epoque decor to a sea of crisp white- and wood-tiled walls. The menu sometimes wanders down memory lane but tends toward Caribbean-influenced offerings such as Brie-crusted grouper served with a fruit salsa. If you are not sure about dining here you can still sample the ambience (and watch the posers) at the trendy M lounge.

It is not an easy challenge to match the quality of top NYC restaurants-- Chez Mathilde does it. We had a superb dinner yesterday; the gold chef-selection menu was excellently prepared and served. Service was attentive and impeccable. Were it in NYC, it would
have likely win a Zagat rating of 25-26.

Pretty place, appetizer and crepes Suzette were wonderful. Toughest piece of Chateaubriand I've ever eaten. Disappointing, we canceled our 2nd reservation.
