Fodor's Review

This landmark property right on the port offers guests the best of both worlds—a short walk to the best shopping on the island and access to a beautiful private beach via a short boat ride from the hotel lobby. The hotel is made up of two distinct parts: the Renaissance Marina Hotel and the Renaissance Ocean Suites. Standard rooms are in the marina section, which is on Oranjestad's main drag and overlooks the harbor. The Ocean Suite rooms are larger and have separate

living areas and kitchenettes. The main hotel pool actually juts out 25 feet above L.G. Smith Boulevard (swimmers can look down on the street). Rooms here are spacious and were renovated in 2013 with sleek accents; some overlook the six-floor atrium filled with restaurants and stores. A 40-acre island just offshore has the only private beaches on Aruba, and is reserved for hotel guests. Most restaurants in the attached Renaissance Seaport Village Mall allow diners to sign for their meals.

Choose the right hotel

First, do not rely on the photos on the resort's website! The beach- its a stretch to call it a beach - is nothing more than a lagoon, not attractive or inviting and very few guests visit it. After only one night in the Ocean Suites we smartly upgraded -ugh- to the Marina Hotel across the street and it was the best decision we could have made. The Ocean Suites are dated and as I said the 'beach' is NOT a beach and the pool area is just OK. The Marina

Hotel is far more attractive, updated and the pool is far superior to the 'beach' and pool at the Ocean Suites. The private Renaissance Island beach is OK though hard near the airport and the service on the Island is fair and the food below par. All in all, we salvaged the trip by switching hotels but there are far more attractive islands then Aruba and the Island and this resort is not one we would visit again.

All this and an island too!

The previous reviewer must have been on another island. Over the years the Renaissance has been our choice because of location, staff friendliness and that beautiful private island. Our Concierge went over and above her duties to help us find Bright Bakery so that we could sample a Fodor's recommended rum cake, even offering to do the shopping for us. We have never had a problem with having our dinner reservations made. Both the Marina and the

Ocean Suites are clean and the staff is comepetent and very friendly. We look forward to seeing them year after year. Stay at Palm Beach when a cruise ship comes in and you will see the advantage of having your own private island. Magnifico!!!!

Mixed Staff Review

We have always been a fan of the Marriott chain. Our trip to the Renaissance shook our faith. Upon checking in a woman was complaining that her suitcases were rummaged. I looked at ours which were sitting in front of the lobby door with no one around. We asked they be secured. We were able to check in at 4 p.m. even though the floors were still wet. Had 3 drafts of local beer at the pool bar - $36?? Called about the free internet my package had.

Was told the internet is down and the help person hung up. Went ahead and paid the $10 a day and argued about it at check out. You have to "prove" it is in your package. Concierge was on break so I tried to make a call to restaurant. Tried the "at your service" again and was told I needed to bring cash to the front desk. Said I was a registered guest with a credit car on file. Was told most people check in and pay with cash. ?? Many of the staff were very friendly but "at your service " was definitely not "at your service" The private island was very nice and it was nice to be able to walk downtown and to the Renaissance Marina.

Always Excellent

We love this hotel! Even more so now that the Marina Tower has gone Adult only. We always stay on the top floor, island view. These rooms have large vaulted ceilings and a balcony. The service is outstanding, we have found many friends upon returning each visit. The private island is wonderful, a must is some time using the private cove.
