Fodor's Expert Review Covecastles Villa Resort
Shoal Bay Village, n/a Anguilla, AI2640, Anguilla
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
Though this secluded Myron Goldfinger–designed enclave resembles a series of giant concrete baby carriages from the outside, the airy curves and angles of the skylighted interiors are comfortable, if a little dated, with the sort of oversize wicker furniture and raw-silk accessories that defined resort-chic in the late 1980s. One- to five-bedroom villas have Brazilian walnut doors, and windows perfectly frame tranquil views of St. Martin. Units are equipped with current amenities like flat-screen TVs and DVD players, but the Formica kitchens and standard-issue bathrooms could stand some upgrading, especially at these prices. The Point, the newest unit, features five large bedrooms right on the beach and a private pool and hot tub on a broad oceanfront terrace. Private catered meals are available.
PROS
- secluded, large, private villas
- private beach with reef for snorkeling
- great service
CONS
- beach is small and rocky
- located at the far end of the island
