Fodor's Expert Review Ratua Private island

Boite postale 396 Lugaville, Espiritu Santo, Sanma, Vanuatu

Think of a log cabin by the sea (several log cabins, really), throw in some rustic, funky furniture, and imagine it all on a 146-acre private island—that's Ratua. The eco-lodge is accessed via a 50-minute flight from Port Vila to Espirito Santo (or Santo, as it's called), followed by a 30-minute car/boat ride to Ratua. The 15 villas, set in three little villages, are more than 200 years old, having been brought here from Indonesia and reconstructed. Each has a private terrace and either one or two bedrooms. Socializing and meals take place in the Yacht Club, whose bar resembles an old Wild West saloon, albeit with a lot more style. All villa furnishings are vintage—the four-poster beds, swathed in diaphanous calico, are particularly stunning. Activities include horseback, canoeing, mountain biking, and trips to the beautiful Blue Holes for swimming. Rates include welcome drinks and a full breakfast; a daily meal plan, with barbecue lunch, evening canapes, and a three-course dinner is available.

PROS

  • completely secluded
  • stylish decor
  • lots of activities to keep you busy

CONS
