Fodor's Expert Review White Grass Ocean Resort

Saltwater Rd., Lenakel, Tafea, Vanuatu

This resort on remote Tanna Island is the place for those who love snorkeling and getting away from it all. Access is via a 35-minute flight from Port Vila and then a quick drive from the small airport. The reef is a short swim from the beach, and the shoreline is dotted with sandy coves and rock pools that are perfect for snorkeling. The 14 bures (bungalows), set among tropical gardens, accommodate up to four, and each has a private terrace. The restaurant, serving dishes with many ingredients from the resort's gardens, overlooks the ocean and is ideal for watching the sunset. Guests can join a free guided snorkeling tour to Turtle Reef, or book a day tour to Yasur Volcano, a traditional Kastom village (such as Epai or Yakel), or a hiking adventure on the White Grass Plains. Or for those feeling adventurous, the resort can arrange a visit to a village where black magic is practiced. Laid-back types may prefer to chill out with a hot-rock massage.
