Government Buildings Historic Reserve

Government Buildings Historic Reserve Review

This second-largest wooden structure in the world is now home to Victoria University's law faculty. After the earthquakes of 1848 and 1855 it was found that wooden buildings suffered less damage than brick. The building was constructed in 1876 and designed to look like stone, though it was actually entirely fashioned from kauri timber. Inside are historic exhibits about the building and an information center, though it's the exterior that most captivates.
