Opposite the Parliament Buildings is the country's national library. The Alexander Turnbull Library, a "library within a library," specializes in documentary materials about New Zealand and the Pacific. Its books, manuscripts, photographs, newspapers, maps, and oral history tapes are open for research. Exhibitions are regularly held in the National Library Gallery. The Gallery has a lively public events program.
