Fodor's Review

Nelson's regional museum occupies part of the original site of New Zealand's first museum. It explores the early settlement of the town, its development as an early port, the original Māori inhabitants, and other events that shaped the region. Exhibits include an outstanding collection of Māori musical instruments, plus a number of artifacts relating to the so-called Maungatapu murders, grisly goldfields killings committed near Nelson in 1866. There are heritage pieces donated from private collections, and regular visiting exhibitions.
