Fodor's Review

This delightful campground, hidden in a beech forest clearing beside the Pelorus River, is part of a scenic reserve. The loudest noises are made by the songster bellbirds—or perhaps campers yelping when they jump into the not-always-so-warm river. Campsites come with or without power, plus access to very modern showers and a kitchen and dining area that opens to a riverside deck. There's also a café. Locals love this place so book ahead over midsummer, or plan your trip when it's not so hectic—the scenery is always the same. The river is the site of the famous "Barrel Scene" in the second Hobbit movie.
