This locale is one of nine Sprig & Fern outlets throughout the Nelson region and Wellington, pouring 100% natural beers and ciders from the Nelson-based brewery. At the flagship bar, there is indoor and courtyard seating, a good bistro menu, and often live music on Saturday night. If you're looking for an even more casual tipple, the Sprig & Fern at nearby Milton Street is a true neighborhood bar set in an old villa.

Sorry, the ale isn't actually free here—the name means that this place isn't tied to any particular brewery, so you can try a range of craft beers from this very crafty beer region. Light meals are served from a food caravan, or you can bring your own food along (the one rule is no global-branded fast food). Eat with the locals in the garden—plates and blankets are provided. Oh, and it's in a former church, which adds another touch of uniqueness.
