Fodor's Review

Imagine being like a bird, able to wander the treetops of the ancient trees in the West Coast rain forest. Now you can, with the development of this 450-meter long, 20-meter high, strong, steel walkway through the forest canopy. You can go even higher on the Hokitika Tower, 40 meters above the forest floor. Views over the rain forest to the dark, glacial Lake Mahinapua, and beyond to the Southern Alps, are a highlight. It sways a bit, but it's solid steel and very safe.

The walkway has been developed in Lake Mahinapua Scenic Reserve in liaison with the Department of Conservation. There is a slight, uphill walk for about 200 meters to reach the actual walkway, but golf carts are available. The entire walkway is also fully wheelchair-accessible. An excellent café (open 9–4) and gift shop are on-site. It's a 15-minute drive south of Hokitika, and just off the main road.
