This is essentially a fly-fishing lodge but if fishing isn't your thing, don't let that stop you from relaxing in these stylish, comfortable cabins for a day or more. Scott "The Trout" Murray, one of New Zealand's top fly-fishing guides, met his Colorado-born wife Leya at a United States fishing convention. It was love at first sight and now they have created their second love, River Haven Lodge, on five acres of landscaped grounds set on the banks of the murmering Mangles
River, just outside of Murchison. Three Colorado mountain-style log cabins are luxuriously fitted with all the comforts of home and more. Prints by famous fly-fisherman Dave Whitlock adorn the walls, an HRV system keeps the air fresh, and there's a fully-equipped kitchen. Pre-dinner drinks and canapes, dinner, lunch (perhaps a picnic) and breakfast (fresh eggs from the chooks outside) are included in your rate; Leya just loves whipping up the classy but homey meals you need before and after a good day's fishing. However if you want to cook for yourself she'll help by stocking up the cabin with anything you ask for. While this is essentially a fly-fishing lodge, your hosts will also organise a day out hiking, biking or visiting wineries.
