Fodor's Review

On the drive up to Karamea from Westport you'll first pass through a series of sleepy coastal villages at Granity, Hector, and Ngakawau. If you want to stay over stop at the really laid-back Gentle Annie Coastal Enclave on the coastline north of the Mokihinui River. A local family oversees various accommodations, ranging from tasteful holiday homes to campsites and run a Cowshed Café in summer, all overlooking the coast or the bush. Kayaks and bikes are available and

they'll provide a mine of information about the local attractions: The Old Ghost Rode mountain bike and walking trail, for example.
