In a World Heritage-listed rain forest on the banks of the Moeraki River and an easy 20-minute bush walk from the Tasman Sea—the superb setting and team of ecoguides make this lodge an ideal place to get absorbed in the environment. On-site naturalists take you along while they feed eels, and show you ancient podocarp trees, orchids, fur seals (year-round), and fiordland crested penguins (June to December). On organized night walks, they'll point out glowworms, freshwater crayfish, and the southern constellations. As well as a full breakfast and four-course dinner, rates include the use of canoes and kayaks, plus two short guided activities daily. Longer guided hikes and canoe safaris, fishing guides, and dinner drinks are extra. Pros: All accommodation had a major refurbishing in 2006, an intense ecoexperience with very knowledgeable owners, generate their own hydropower. Con: It's a long way from anywhere.
