Matheson Cafe Review

After an early start, trying to catch the mornings' reflections on nearby Lake Matheson, visit this delightful café for a really good coffee and breakfast. The view from the café is stunning in its own way, surrounded by an amphitheater of distant mountains (Aoraki/Mt. Cook and Mt. Tasman) and, in the foreground, tall kahikatea forest—one of New Zealand's scenic icons. The food is as good as the views, and the sunny terrace is pleasant on a still day. Try the manuka honey-and-herbed lamb burger for a tasty lunch or, for dinner (Nov. to March) a gourmet pizza, or perhaps pork belly. Take time also to browse the Reflectionz Gifts and Galley next door.

    Matheson Cafe Review

An open airy building facing a distant Mount Cook on one side and the mossy rainforest around Lake Matheson on another, this cafe serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Entrees included a light chicken salad, lime and pepper calamari; there is a range of pizzas on a light crust including a crisp tasting smoked fish, anchovies and capers variety; mains include beef, salmon and you can have a small serve of sides - chunky potato chips with the skin still on, asparagus with lemon butter, or salads. Waitstaff were excellent with a young European waiter providing an attentive professional service, pitched well both to adults and children alike. Coloured pencils and paper produced for children. Food light and fresh, atmosphere comfortable and pleasant, quiet and relaxing. Marvellous place to visit for a meal after walking around Lake Matheson or shopping next door in the gallery.
