Fodor's Review

A stunning place to visit. The state-of-the-art, multilevel gravity-fed winery and gallery of Woollaston Estate nestles unobtrusively on a hillside in Mahana. In an area once known solely for apple production, the wines now being created from this district are maturing superbly. The gallery is beside the cellar door tasting area, and shows internationally acclaimed artists including works by co-owner Phillip Woollaston's father, Toss, one of the country's best-known artists.

In fact, art and sculpture can be appreciated throughout the estate. Woollaston produces pinot noir rose (from 100% pinot noir grapes), sauvignon blanc, riesling, and pinot gris, and their pinot noir has received special accolades. The gorgeous views over the mountains and Tasman Bay suggest relaxing on the lawn with a tasting platter and wine. The tussock-roofed winery is also a venue for live music (including jazz), literature, and other cultural events on the Nelson festival circuit.
