It's natural that Creative Tourism New Zealand should have started in Nelson, a hotbed of the country's arts and crafts. Bringing artisans such as potters, carvers, weavers, and painters together under one umbrella, for visitors interested in the arts to work with these experts in their own field -- or studio, as the case may be. The pottery classes held at Macmillans Gallery (92 Bateup Rd., Richmond. 03/544-5853. www.creativetourism.co.nz) are especially popular; you can learn to throw a pot or a jug, or paint a design onto a ceramic vase.

I have just arrived in the beautiful Nelson region where I got to do one of the exciting workshops offered by Creative Tourism. It's definitely a fun experience, and a one that each traveller shoud go for!! The tutors welcomes you to their homes and provide for the possibility to watch them doing their traditional handicrafts while actually getting involved!!
Creative Tourism also has more tutors located in Christchurch, Waikato or Taupo, so let's hope that soon you will be able to find one close to wherever you are in NZ!

I did the bone carving workshop with Stephan, near Nelson, through Creative Tourism. It was such a wonderful day, we got to create our own amazing bone carving from design through to polishing! And Stephan was very knowledgeable about the history and cultural significance of this fascinating craft. I wear my carving everyday and get so many comments - people are amazed i made it myself! I highly recommend creative tourism, it so nice to do something different to the standard tourist trail, and you get a lovely souvenir to take home too!
