Marlborough's finest dining experience is tucked away along a short side road leading down to the Wairau River. Superb three- and five-course dinner menus pair Herzog wines with innovative dishes; the set and à la carte menus might include silky yellowfin tuna carpaccio, seared Nelson scallops with asparagus-ricotta ravioli, or a whole red snapper in a salt crust. The legendary degustation dinners ($185 per person) are booked well in advance, but you can often chance a dinner booking a day or so ahead of your visit. In addition to the wine pairings, you can study the wine list of 500 vintages. Retire to the lounge after dinner for a coffee or a digestif. Herzog runs very popular cooking classes from November to March and has a boutique vineyard cottage for the use of restaurant guests.
