Lake Rotoroa Lodge

Fodor's Review:

Now recognized as one of the best fly-fishing lodges in the world, this truly private haven sheltered beneath tall trees on Lake Rotoroa was built for "gentlemen travelers" in the days when horse and buggy was the local transport. Now it lures anglers with a combination of old-fashioned charm and newfangled luxury, from the brass beds and hunting trophies to the expert fishing guides and outstanding wine list. Pros: Old, heritage-style building looks across the lake; some of the best brown trout fishing in the world; beautiful walking tracks through native bush. Cons: A very scenic but 90-minute drive from Nelson, use repellent religiously as the sandflies here are legendary, lunch not included in the rate.
