Tancred Street Review
In several places along and just off Tancred Street, you can check out the work of local artisans, particularly the pounamu carvings the area's known for.
Westland Greenstone. Westland Greenstone has an interesting walk-through workshop where you can watch greenstone being cut, shaped, and polished. Unlike some places Westland uses local greenstone (pounamu) rather than imported jade. Check when you're buying that it's the real thing and not an imported stone. 34 Tancred St., Hokitika, 7810. 03/755–8713.
Hokitika Craft Gallery Co-operative. At the Hokitika Craft Gallery Co-operative greenstone carvings are joined by pottery, woodwork, and textiles. 25 Tancred St., Hokitika. 03/755–8802.
Jade Factory. The larger Jade Factory also has a greenstone cutting area, stone painting, and a café. They have a mix of local greenstone and imported jade. 41 Weld St., Hokitika. 03/755–8007.
