Dining at a vineyard is a great way to appreciate how seriously the best New Zealand winemakers have food in mind when they create their wine. Local produce stars at this pleasant indoor-outdoor eatery. Marlborough Greenshell mussels, steamed open in Hunter's Riesling with wild thyme and garlic, are a great match for a glass of that same riesling. Dishes such as double-braised lamb shanks with rosemary potatoes may tempt you to try one of the Hunter's reds. They're leaner and greener than North Island examples, but they go well with the local food. The garden here is especially lovely, with native plants -- cabbage trees, tussock grasses, rengarenga lilies -- interspersed with exotic rhododendrons, magnolias, and Australian gums.
