Allan Scott Wines

Allan Scott Wines Review

Allan Scott planted the first grapes in Marlborough in 1973 before planting the family's own vineyard two years later. He helped establish the big-selling Stoneleigh label for Corbans, then the country's second-biggest wine company, before launching his own company in 1990. Now he makes well-respected sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot gris, pinot noir, methode traditionelle (try the Blanc de Blancs), gewürztraminer, and Riesling (the last two are particularly good). The whole family is involved: Allan's son Joshua is now winemaker, his younger daughter Sara is viticulturist, and elder daughter Victoria looks after marketing. Josh also makes NZ's first methode traditionelle beer—a tasty, rather manly brew called Moa, at his Moa Beer brewery just across the road. The Allan Scott cellar door adjoins the indoor-outdoor Twelve Trees restaurant, which adjoins a delightful herb garden and opens for brunch from 9am and lunch from 11:30am to 3pm ($$–$$$). Marlborough salmon fillet and seafood chowder are menu classics.
