One of the better on-the-road cafés in the area (actually one of the few) serving great breakfasts and wholesome lunches to both passersby and the happy campers in the adjacent Kahikatea Flat DOC Campsite. The food is good and so is the setting. The backdrop beside the rocky, tree-lined Pelorus River is lovely, especially in summer when you can eat under the trees. Tolkein/Jackson fans might recognize the river; it was here that the Hobbits performed their famous "Barrel Scene."

Over twenty years I have often called in at this wonderful location. In the past the food, service and coffee has been good however I was shocked at the lack of service and the dismal quality of food and coffee this time around. I had to demand that my debitcard transaction was cancelled on the first machine was "busy". Seemed odd the waitress had to swipe my card on a second machine and was also very rude when I asked if I could use my credit card,
which you can't. The flat white resembled a truck stop coin operated machine coffee with no taste and the corn and bacon fritter was appalling. I left both unfinished and wondered why I had just wasted $10.80 on such rubbish. The location is excellent, the trees, birds and river walks are beautiful, however the toilets were dirty and full of blow flies..... Would not return, next time take a picnic to enjoy by the river!!
