This 1923 house is one of Marlborough's original homesteads; its craftsmanship, skilled use of native timber, and luxurious interior evoke an elegant past. The gardens extend over 25 acres and include a pool, a tennis court, a private lake, and masses of clipped hedging. Chef Louis Schindler prepares sumptuous four-course table d'hôte dinners based on local ingredients; wines included. Wine tours, trout fishing, sea kayaking, golf, skiing, even whale-watching (an hour and a half away in Kaikoura) can be arranged. The owners have their own vineyard and winery, producing the extremely successful Spy Valley label.
