Fodor's Review

Luxury, pure, simple luxury, is the hallmark of this1923 house, one of Marlborough's original homesteads, with a luxurious, finely crafted interior that evokes an elegant past and 25 acres of gardens. There’s an English-country house feel and beautiful outlooks from the luxurious, tastefully decorated suites and rooms. Most spacious is the Lake Suite, with a sitting room, while the Garden Suite features a smaller sitting room overlooking the garden. The Mountain Room has a private entrance, two-person spa bath, and romantic balcony window, while the gorgeous Balcony Room sits on a glassed-in verandah, with all-day sun and expansive views. Tucked into the grounds are a pool, tennis court, private lake, lawns, and masses of clipped hedging. Chef Louis Schindler prepares sumptuous four-course table d'hôte dinners based on local ingredients; wines included. Wine tours, trout fishing, sea kayaking, golf, skiing, and whale-watching (1½ hours away in Kaikoura) can be arranged. The owners have their own vineyard and winery, the highly successful Spy Valley.
