Just 10 minutes into the coutnry east of Hokitika, this purpose-built two-story lodge sits high above the Hokitika River valley and is the only Qualmark five-star B&B on the West Coast. The extensive views encompass the Hokitika River, farmland, and native forest, stretching all the way to the Southern Alps. Surroundings are leafy and green, framed by three acres of native bush and garden. The four guest rooms, named for local native birds, are a good size, as are the en suite bathrooms. All four catch the morning sun. The two ground-floor guest rooms open out onto the large breakfast deck area, one is fully accessible. Upstairs the rooms are larger, as are the views. The social hub of the lodge is the Great Room, with it's spectacular cathedral ceiling and big fireplace. The room also opens to the outdoors. Quirky fact: beneath the lodge and its neighboring properties lies a long tunnel running deep into the hill, a relic from the district's active gold-mining days and now inhabited by cave wetas.
