Fishing

Anatoki Salmon. If spending the day on a boat feeling wretched and seasick has no appeal, then try the fishing at Anatoki Salmon, a working salmon farm next to the sparkling, clear river of the same name. This excellent spot is just 10 minutes out of Takaka, on the edge of the Kahurangi Park. You can fish for salmon then have it cooked and prepared at the onsite cafe ($) while you wait. Or put it through a hot smoker for freshly smoked salmon! Entry is free; just pay for what you catch. Fishing gear is provided, and no experience necessary. Bring a picnic and the kids, and call it a day. McCallum Rd., Anatoki Valley, Takaka, 7183. 0800/262-865 (NZ only); 03/525-7251. www.anatokisalmon.co.nz. Free. Daily 9-4:30.

Enchanted Forest

The Grove is a small patch of native forest at Rocklands, on the road from Takaka to Pohara, that escaped development when the area was cleared for farming. It is an enchanting collection of giant rata, elegant nikau palms, and trailing vines. Adding to the magic is the fact they are all growing between and over gnarly limestone outcrops and gulches. In early summer the rata wear a cloak of bright scarlet flowers. It's a 10-minute walk each way from the parking lot. Heading towards Pohara from Takaka, turn right off Abel Tasman Drive at Clifton. Follow the signs to The Grove; its not far.
