Skippers Canyon

Skippers Canyon Review

One of the enduring attractions in the area is the drive up Skippers Canyon. Harking back to the days when the hills were filled with gold diggers, the Skippers Road was hand carved out of rock, and it reaches into the deep recesses of the Shotover Valley. It's breathtakingly gorgeous but you could also be breathtakingly scared: if you're not confident about navigating a twisty, narrow, unsealed road fraught with slips and vertical drops, we suggest you take a tour and recommend Queenstown Heritage Tours.

Nomad Safaris. Nomad Safaris runs two trips a day up the Skippers Canyon in specialized 4WD vehicles. 03/442–6699. www.nomadsafaris.co.nz.

Queenstown Heritage Tours. Skippers Canyon is a breathtakingly beautiful and historically rich place to go but the unsealed road (built by the goldminers in the 1880s) is narrow and curvy with a steep dropoff down to the valley below. It's not for the inexperienced and rental cars won't insure you for it. Queenstown Heritage Tours will take you there on a historical tour in comfortable of air-conditioned vehicles with delicious snacks. They also run separate wine lovers tours in Gibbston Valley in the afternoon. Unit 10, 174 Glenda Dr., 9371. 03/409–0949. www.queenstown-heritage.co.nz. From $NZ160.
