Rafting is an adult thrill; children must be at least 13 to participate. You'll need your swimsuit and a towel, but all other gear, including wet suit, life jacket, helmet, and wet-suit booties, are provided by the rafting companies. Instructors spend quite a bit of time on safety issues and paddling techniques before you launch.
Mad Dog River Boarding. Mad Dog River Boarding proves that looks can be deceiving. The Kawerau seems calmer than the Shotover; but that's debatable. In addition to riding down the Kawerau River on a bodyboard, there's a giant waterslide, big rope swing, and good old rock jumping (beat your chest and holler). 37 Shotover St., Queenstown, 9300. 03/442–7797. www.riverboarding.co.nz..
Queenstown Rafting. Queenstown Rafting runs various half-, full-, and three-day white-water rafting trips in the Queenstown area year-round, advertising trips on the Shotover and Kawerau rivers. The Kawerau is pitched as a more scenic first-timer river. Or go all out with the Nevis Triple Challenge, which includes a jet-boat ride, a helicopter trip, rafting on the Shotover, and a bungy jump, all in one day. 35 Shotover St., Queenstown, 9300. 03/442–9792 or 0800/723–8464. www.rafting.co.nz.
Frogz White Water Sledging. Frogz White Water Sledging Join the frogz and take a hydrospeed sledge down the Kawerau River. The half-day Roaring Meg trip (NZ$159) lets you ride 5 km (3 mi) down the river, and once you've gotten the hang of things and learned to control your sledge, they let you maneuver it down again. Super Frogz can tackle the "Chinese Dogleg" rapid in the full-day Gorge trip (NZ$399). Roaring Meg Power Station, Queenstown. 03/441–2318. www.frogz.co.nz..
